American Poet LANGSTON HUGHES. (1902-1967)
"When people care for you and cry for you, they can straighten out your soul."
THE BIG EMPTY HOUSE
The lonely widow spent another day
In the house where she had shared
So many words they had to say
With the man for whom she cared
He just up and left her a year ago
To spend his time with God
Now what to do, she still doesn't know
Her life now seems so odd
She wanders around her kitchen
Remembering meals she would prepare
Just for two of them back then
Over dinner their thoughts they shared
Going about a daily routine
Is like living on an assembly line
She feels like an old worn out machine
Just rusting, biding time
If she knew that people cried for her
If she knew that people cared
Life might somehow revive for her
If she were not so alone and scared
Just a call, a note, a surprise visit
Just proof there's someone there
Would go far to lift the old lady's spirit
If you've got a moment to spare
