He was the boy at the bus stop with the Spiderman back pack
The one who in junior high excelled and ran track
She was the girl at your daughter's sleepover
Who wore the cute pajamas with horseshoes and clover
He was the boy who sat the bench during football games
You've seen his face, but don't remember his name
She was the girl who always wanted to make the grade
But C's were the best that she ever made
He was the boy who was the first to enlist
Knowing it was wartime and he'd be at risk
The girl needed a boost to help her to college
She figured the Army would earn her that knowledge
The hometown boy had reason to brag
But he was a hero who came home draped with a flag
The girl once friends with your daughter last year
Fought and died bravely showing no fear
And so it is played out again and again
Children you know meet an untimely end
Their hopeful faces smiling in the yearbook you see
Were the sons and the daughters of people like me
