Of all of the characteristics needed for both a happy and morally decent life, none surpasses gratitude. Grateful people are happier and grateful people are more morally decent.

Selfishness will rot your soul
So I am told
Selflessness is a characteristic
Worth it's weight in gold
Loathing is an acid
That burns you from inside
Loving is an attraction
You'd never want to hide
Hate is an emotion
Of judgements deem unjust
Respect is much preferred
Than to live with bitter mistrust
Chaos brings your kingdom down
No one runs to you with aide
Harmony brings true friendship
Your dues are always paid
Greed may bring you assets
That you never want to share
Charity gives you that feeling
Of forever answered prayer
The unthankful live in loneliness
For entitlements they think they earn
The grateful live as self assured
Taking heed of lessons learned
