The quote is from John Dewey, an American Philosopher. 1859-1952.
Time and memory are true artists, they remold reality nearer to the heart’s desire.
DREAMS MEET REALITY
Amid the creative gremlins of the mind
Rearranging the realities to suit one's expectations
Are hopes and dreams anyone might find
That one will see looking back at his reflection
Time brings experiences that actually occurred
Memories, of course, are sugar-coated
Reality is easy to become obscured
And the facts become easily demoted
You are the artist of the portrait of yourself
The book of truth based on the fiction of desires
You have the creation displayed on your shelf
Made from the clay you molded and fired
Somewhere along the way reality meets your dreams
And you are the result standing there
A concoction of of facts and your heartfelt schemes
Become the person you prefer to share
Commentary:
It took me much longer to write this poem than usual. I found the quote very interesting and knew what I wanted to say but wanted to say it in a certain way.
Seems to me people are a creation of time, influence, genetics, and personal aspirations brought about by the combination there of.
There is overall honesty in the presentation of one's self, but there are white lies mixed in to hide a person's own disappointment with himself. Or perhaps to disguise what has brought about the disappointment of his peers.
Then there are those who are one big lie with very little reality showing. Obama perhaps?
Really, you can look at a plastic person who may have been brought up in a poor family trying so hard to recreate themselves that there is little truth left in that person. It can go so many ways, the rich kid ashamed of his entitlements, the gay kid who wants so much to please his loved ones he never lives as his true self. The politician denying his true path to please his party, or the spouse who stays with someone they don't love because there is more to gain financially or in status than they can get following their true passion.
How many people do we know are living with some degree of fiction? I'd say 100%.
